More ideas that will never happen: Ghibli adaptation of Twilight

Fired: Ghibli Narnia movie

Wired: Ghibli Midworld movie

A little girl, Izumi, has fallen ill and her parents have sent her to live in a quiet, idyllic part of the country to help her recover.

The forest around the cottage is haunted by a strange dark spirit, a being that has spent countless years wandering the world and exiled from its home for reasons long forgotten but unforgiven, known only as Edge.

Edge begins to notice some odd activity in the cottage. It sneaks in at night and watches the little girl sleep, trying to figure out what is wrong with her.

Izumi eventually finds signs of Edge's presence and follows a trail of hints it inadvertently leaves behind, including the sparkles in the air that betray its swan disguise in strong sunlight, and eventually finds it in its secret place in the forest.

The guardian spirits of the forest, in the form of a pack of wolves, follow her, hunting down this rogue invader and believing Izumi herself to be responsible for some terrible evil. Edge fights them off for a while until Izumi collapses from her illness and the wolves realize they have the wrong target. The wolves and Edge set aside their differences to bring her to the secret place so they could work together to revive her with their combined powers.

Izumi awakens and they talk over food. It turns out a mining company is in the process of exploring the area and negotiating an acquisition of the forest, and the wolves have been trying to find the source of these strange devices and chemicals and machine-spirits that have been threatening the area.

They try to come up with a plan to stop the development. Many ideas are tried, including violence (over Izumi's vociferous and forcibly restrained objections). Eventually there is an escalating confrontation but Edge helps Izumi escape her room that the wolf spirits have locked her in and they save the lives of several mining company employees and numerous wolves.

Later the wolves try to stop the miners again. This time Izumi's strength fails her and she is bedridden and critically ill. Edge frets over whether to intervene in the battle - and leave Izumi to die - or try to save her with what remains of its power. At the end it tears out a piece of its core essence and infuses her with it. She recovers and we see Edge's form fade away into the forest, never to be seen again.

The outcome of the battle is violent and ambiguous. We later see Izumi as a grown woman relating her experience, talking with her grandchildren as they look at the cottage in an old photograph. Cut to the cottage in its current state, ruined and totally overgrown - and surrounded by beautiful trees that bear a curious resemblance to Edge's secret place.
