a report, of sort

Hello world! I'm sorry for basically disappearing. To be 100% honest, I'm not doing well, although to be even more honest (110%?) I haven't been doing well all year, so there is that. I'm trying to keep up appearances, but there's bound to be moments where it becomes harder...

In any case, I do want to share good news! I know I said I was going to make another goal post for the month, but I don't actually think it's a good idea right now. The thought of having a list to follow is bringing me down more than anything else, lol. So I'll pass, and just try to do my best to keep working on things at my own pace.

Anyway, the news:

  • The ZA countdown is going well! Haven't had anybody dropping out so far (fingers crossed I don't jinx myself by saying this, lmao) and seeing everybody's different takes and art styles really does bring a smile to my face.

  • My PRFR fanlisting is up and running and has been officially added to The Fanlistings Network! Not much else to say about that. Feel free to look at it if you want.

  • Since I can't seem to be able to do anything lately, I've been catching up on stuff I wanted to check out:

    • I did a Nan Quest reread! Also discovered that apparently the old Ruby from Ruby Quest shimeji was considered "lost media"? So I reuploaded the one I still had on my computer and shared it on Tumblr.

    • I caught up on The Summer Hikaru Died, which I'd been meaning to read for a couple of years.

    • I also got into Mouthwashing fashionably late :P I bought a T-shirt!

We're about to finally watch the Pluto anime, something I've been looking forward since it was first announced, and I'm very excited for James and Noah to see it.

  • Okay, that last one was a bit overly dramatic, I have been getting some writing done. I'm steadily working on my pieces for [community profile] pokepodproject and I wrote two Mouthwashing double drabbles in French (here and here, not that I think this interests anyone heh.) So there is that, I suppose. I think I've also figured out what's been blocking me re: my chaptered WIP, but who knows if that'll actually lead to me writing anything, lmao.

  • I have not yet managed to figure out a rec list for [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles and I do kind of feel bad about it (I suspect it may be part of why I was avoiding posting here, even.) My own works revealed though, if you want to check them out:

    • Refuge, The Legend of Zelda, Link & Malon

    • Pugnalata, Mozart l'Opéra Rock, Mozart/Salieri

    • Room for Two, Compilation of FFVII, Cid/Vincent

I need to crosspost them (and the French drabbles) to [community profile] teamflare at some point... I also need to reply to my comments.

That's about it. If you're reading this, I hope you're doing alright! Sorry I haven't been keeping up with my reading page either. I'll get back to it at some point. I'd love to know what you've been up to in the comments if you feel like sharing. 🦚

"Good morning."

I woke up at 3am to watch the premiere of Kamen Rider Zeztz, and I've been regretting it ever since. Not that the premiere was bad—although it wasn't really good either—but with my current work schedule and the time I have to be up in order to get the train, it's just too punishing. I spent the day zoning in and out of fitful sleep. All the while, somewhat fittingly, the first episode of Zeztz played on loop.

I've watched this episode in bits and pieces throughout most of the day since waking up, making tea, and sitting down with friends in discord. It's playing now as I write this, in fact. I don't have anything to say about the content of the episode, it's a typical episode by Takahashi Yuya, whose stories I don't really enjoy, but what I do want to talk about is the fact that a Kamen Rider show just aired with multiple subtitles for an international audience just an hour after its broadcast in Japan. When I say "international," I don't just mean America either. We got it! Hong Kong got it! Mainland China got it! Brazil got it! Even though I don't have strong feelings about this new show, I can't believe that happened! That it will happen next week! And the week after that! And for a total of roughly fifty weeks all the way to September of next year! I want to sing the praises of Shout Factory, who previously aroused nothing but my ire as whenever they would get the rights to a Toei show, it would mean the rest of us were locked out for good, and I definitely want to praise all the good that Sato Company are doing in Brazil. Before this I had taken Toei's commitment to an "international approach" with a pinch of salt, the missteps of the past few years feeling as if they were taking that salt and rubbing it in the wound, but this... maybe something good is going to come of this; maybe building success here and creating little Kabutack spin-offs for mainland China over the last few years is the beginning of something really good.

Every time I try and talk about things, I realise how tired I am though, so maybe this isn't making much sense. I'm going to bed now, but you who are reading this are assumedly not, so I want to encourage you to go and watch this looped stream of a show that I didn't really care for because maybe you do, and if more people care about these shows, even the ones I don't like, maybe we really will see Kamen Rider become as familiar to audiences here as Marvel comic characters have become. I'd really like that. For now, though, I'm going to sleep.

Good night.

Small Web September Check-In 1: Links!

We’ve reached the first check-in point for Small Web September! How is everyone doing so far? Whether you’re just getting warmed up or are already ticking off goals (or maybe you just found this and want to join – welcome!), come and share your progress in the comments of this check-in.

The theme of this week’s check-in is links! Earlier this year, I came across Coy ([personal profile] osteophage)’s link compilation in praise of links, which led me down a rabbit hole of reading various essays about the importance of hyperlinking and being a good steward of the web. This includes not making your own site into an effective dead end, but sending people on to interesting destinations via links that you’ve included there.

I’ve always been a lover of curating cool webpages and sites, but it struck me that I wasn’t actually doing much of this on my own little website – now, it’s a personal fanworks archive, so you could argue that linking out to random pages is a bit out of step with the purpose of it. However, it broadened my thinking about where I could start adding more links: from archiving rec lists to linking out to gifts that other fans had made for me over the years.

So, the discussion starter for this check-in is: how do you link, and to what? Do you have a link hub or set of interesting finds? Would you like to do more with links?

Private community for storing drafts, templates and symbols

(cross-posted from [community profile] newcomers)

Sharing my method for saving unpublished posts on Dreamwidth since I haven't seen it mentioned before:

It's basically just creating a community for yourself with all posts set to private (here's how). That'll serve as a repository for posts only visible to you that you can organise with tags exclusive to the community. I also use my private community to store post templates with code and put in a sticky post a bunch of often used emoji along with other symbols to copy and paste when I'm on my PC.

Does anyone know of any other less known methods for saving drafts on Dreamwidth? ☺️
