The season's first snowfall came early this year, about a week.

He was with her when it first snowed last year. There was music, and he thought he knew happiness. He knew because he saw, because seeing was the only way he could know. She was happy then. If not, then at least she found refuge from the horror.

It felt like yesterday. Like last week. Like next week - an eternity ago. He lost his ability to sense time years ago, and knew it had been years by seeing the dates of news events that were current at the time when he lapsed.

He wanted to go out into the snow, to feel it under his feet, his breath coalescing into cloud before him, to enjoy how real it was. But for safety's sake he had to remain inside - and it would be too cold to feel anything anyway. A mild disappointment, and only so as long as he held the nostalgia at bay. He did not miss walking, for the vehicle they gave him was so much more convenient, and his legs were like a dream within a memory.

But now the Master has taken away even his hands. He wonders what the jar around him looks like, and where the Master was storing his eye.
