There was a bug flying around inside the garbage chute room.

It must have come from the chute, hatched a while ago and flown its way up towards the light, that ever-glowing white fluorescent above both our heads.

It would not survive up here. In the room is nothing. It will fly about until it was let out or it died of exhaustion.

I had a thought to grab it and throw it back down the chute, whence it came. It might find a mate there, and food, and it could live out the rest of its few days in comfort in the realm of its birth.

But another thought came to me.

It awoke, and found life amidst the darkness and the filth. It lived in comfort for a while, then one day on its travels it discovered the light. Drawn by the instinct of innumerable years, it yearned for this light.

A long and hazardous journey it must have had, flying up the chute, dodging bags and backtracking from deceitful dead ends. Now it was in the same room as the light, and had only to reach it. Somehow.

I left the garbage chute room with the bug flying around inside it.
