Amazingly, the comments are even worse. Like, YouTube worse. Here's a rather disturbing look into the creationist, patriarchal, is-ist* and just plain creepy mindset the anti-death zombies think in:
*Which I've since narrowed down to the basic act of taking a category and fetishizing it as inviolate and sacrosanct - a bit of an anticlimax, I know.

...Because, of course, the state can always legislate someone into wanting and willing something.
Regarding your second paragraph, who forces an unwanted pregnancy on anyone? Yes, I know, rapists do, but their children account for very few of the abortions induced. Don't Canadian women realize the purpose of specialized female anatomy? Don't they understand the complementary male anatomy? Motherhood is a responsibility, and there is such a thing as child abuse.
...
Every child a wanted child, and every mother a willing mother.

It weirds me out that people think of something that probably could not live if it were birthed at that point as a "child."

So yeah, all about control and legislatively enforced patriarchy.
*I think I'll call them this from now on, the way I call creationists zombies. They're "pro-life", but they only promote life in a mindless, non-functional way that causes serious damage in the long term and ultimately helps no one.

Date: July 3rd, 2008 17:57 (UTC)...only there is quite a bit of doubt regarding that.
I'm also bugged by this commenter's insistence that the woman raise the child herself, rather than, say, put it up for adoption. But I guess God doesn't like adoption or something.

Date: July 3rd, 2008 18:20 (UTC)...it's the sort of thinking that is why I must be pro-choice even if I were to believe that everything from zygote onwards had, philosophically, equal status with a fully-formed human being.

shootingstabbing spree, I'm going to write this guy off as a troll.(no subject)
Date: July 6th, 2008 04:34 (UTC)I really hate the idea that a woman does not own herself even after she is legally old enough to do so. (Whether or not she is married!)
Also, it looks like he is trying to relate things that are not exactly related.
I think the troll decision sounds the best, though I am saddened to think that he probably DOES espouse that view. -_-

Date: July 6th, 2008 04:52 (UTC)See my reply below. The only relevant argument is that there's also the fetus's interest to consider in addition to the woman's.
The rest is just supporting cultural context, but of the very sort of culture that no one in their right mind would espouse in a UDHR (http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html)-ratifying state.

Date: July 3rd, 2008 14:08 (UTC)It says that the new Canada — the Canada of Michaelle Jean, and Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin (who chaired the selection committee) and the mummers who sat on the committee are as like the old Canada as, in Hamlet's words, "am I to Hercules." In old Canada, Morgentaler was prosecuted and sent to jail for performing illegal abortions.
The irony completely escapes him that Hamlet is the most intelligent character in all literature while Hercules was a murderous mongoloid on divine steroids of ichor.

Sometimes I wonder if the irony actually is lost on him, or really if there's any irony at all. I mean, the "old Canada" that he gets so nostalgic about is the same one that ghettoized its ethnic groups, kept Chinamen around as disposable hardware, explicitly tried a soft genocide on the natives by breaking up their families and criminalizing their sacred rites, and how did we decide to get involved in WWI again?
We did burn down the White House, but then again that was before most foreign nations had any good reason to.
